I'm not a complainer or a chronic "product review guy." I ordered over 100 bricks for a fire box on an outdoor fireplace I was building. Living in AZ my options were limited to purchase bricks from a retailer. Even though I fully expected high shipping costs I decided I had to go that route to get what I wanted. I will say that Menards price blew the competition out of the water. Even with shipping costs matching the price of the brick it was still cheaper than most other options. The product itself was great, the bricks are very symmetrical and easy to use, cut, and lay. The finished product is beautiful. I have zero issues withy the product itself. My only issue was with shipping, Menards shipped promptly and accurately, no issues. Upon arrival I was sadly disappointed. The bricks come in boxes of 6 bricks that were taped together so that 12 bricks were shipped in a package. My first order was multiple packages containing close to 100 bricks. Upon arrival 26 bricks had broken corners or large chips, 5 bricks were broken in more than 2 pieces. I had ordered extra expecting some to be damaged, but even after using the chipped and damaged bricks for cut pieces and partial bricks I was still short. After spending several hundred dollars on fire brick I wasn't about to lay broken brick in the fire box. (I'm aware I'm a bit OCD) I ordered more to finish the job and this time they weren't on sale :( I ordered only 18 bricks knowing I needed 12 to finish the job. Again I was sadly disappointed, over half were chipped and had broken corners and 3 bricks were broken in two. Now all this being said I decided to do this during the holiday season so I'm sure the UPS man was less than kind hauling around hundreds of pounds of brick during Christmas. The brick was shipped in the manufacturers box so the brick could have been damaged before it was ever shipped. I can say that the brick was packaged in the manufactures box and no consideration was taken at all for rough handling during shipping process. I don't know who would be at fault and I never pursued it, I chalked it up as a valuable lesson learned. Just use caution if u have to order brick on line. Next time I'll definitely be shopping a little harder locally even if it cost me a few more bucks.
Pros: Very symmetrical, easy to work with and install with minimal masonry experience. Priced very low. Cut easy and without breaking.
Cons: High shipping costs (they're heavy), majority of bricks damaged upon arrival.
